Eliminate Debt - Easy To Follow Tips For Everyone

One of the first tips that anyone will give you when they are telling you to get out of debt is to get rid of all of your credit cards except one. You can use one in case of an emergency. Universal credit cards, such as MasterCard and Visa, were not used by the public until the 1970s. Before that, people got by with paying for things with cash. Today, however, we are a nation that is consumed with instant gratification. It is no wonder that so many of us have bitten off more than we can chew and have fallen into debt.

You only need one credit card so do the right thing and cut up all of the others. Use a debit card if possible. Debit cards now have Visa and MasterCard logs so you can use them the same way you use credit cards.

The next tip is to actually save money. Put away about 20 percent of your paycheck each week in a savings account. You should always have money saved and never live from hand to mouth. If you lose your job or have some sort of problem that you cannot work, you should have money put aside so that you can afford to continue to pay your rent or mortgage and not get evicted or foreclosed upon.

Saving is a habit that is hard to get yourself into. Some of us are used to spending all of our money each week when we get paid. If you look at a savings account as a bill that has to be paid, you will actually save money. If at all possible, have the money deducted each month from your checking account.

Cut down on your food bill. Shop at a discount grocer instead of the large supermarket. Eat chicken instead of beef and cook as much as you can instead of eating out all of the time. Eating out costs a lot of money and can really take its toll on your wallet, especially if you have a family. You should try to cook casseroles and meals at home to save some money.

Put money aside in envelopes for things that you want to buy. You can have an envelope for the kid's school clothes and one for entertainment. Each time you get a little something extra, put it in one of these envelopes. People years ago, if they got even $5, went down to the bank and deposited the money. People today do not do that. If you learn to save just a little bit, you will work towards being debt free.

Learn that you do not have to get everything you want right away and neither do your kids. It will not kill anyone to want something. We have become a society that wants whatever we want immediately. We have to start thinking like our grandparents if we are to get debt free and start saving for a future.
